Build 2026: Fabric IQ is generally available, ontology still in preview
At Build 2026, Microsoft made Fabric IQ, Graph in Fabric and operations agents generally available. The ontology item stays in preview, with general availability expected in the coming months.
Microsoft Build opened on June 2, 2026, and Fabric IQ moved out of preview.
What was announced
- Fabric IQ is generally available. The ontology item inside it is still in preview; Microsoft expects its general availability in the coming months.
- Graph in Fabric and operations agents are generally available.
- Ontologies in Microsoft Foundry, in preview. Foundry agents can use Fabric IQ ontologies as knowledge sources.
- Fabric IQ in Agent 365, in preview, as a first-party MCP tool.
- Fabric IQ in Microsoft 365 Copilot is open to the Frontier program, and Fabric IQ tools reach GitHub Copilot CLI through open-source Agent Skills for Fabric.
Why it matters
Read the stages closely. The workload is generally available; the ontology item is not yet. Microsoft is telling customers the platform is ready while the modeling surface keeps maturing. That is a sensible order.
For companies, the practical point is that the places an ontology can be used keep growing: Fabric, Foundry, Agent 365, Microsoft 365 Copilot. Each new surface is another agent that will read the same definitions. Teams that treat the ontology as a shared, reviewed business asset, not a side file one analyst maintains, will get the most from that reach.
