Microsoft acquires Osmos for data engineering in Fabric
Microsoft announced it is acquiring Osmos, a data engineering platform that uses agents to turn raw data into analytics-ready assets in OneLake. The team joins Fabric engineering.
On January 5, 2026, Microsoft announced it is acquiring Osmos. Terms were not disclosed.
What was announced
- Osmos builds agents that do data engineering work, turning raw data into assets ready for analytics and AI in OneLake.
- The Osmos team joins Fabric engineering.
Why it matters
Most of the cost of an analytics project goes into getting data clean, joined and shaped. If agents can take on a large share of that work, Fabric customers get to usable data faster.
The hard part of data engineering was never only the code. It is knowing what the business wants the data to say. Should a returned order still count in last month's revenue? Is a reactivated customer new or returning? An agent can write the pipeline quickly. It still needs someone to tell it which answer the business has chosen, and that needs to be written down somewhere both the pipeline agent and the question-answering agent can read.
