The official MCP Registry opens in preview

The MCP project launched an official registry for MCP servers in preview, with an open API so companies can run their own sub-registries.

On September 8, 2025, the Model Context Protocol project opened the official MCP Registry in preview at registry.modelcontextprotocol.io.

What launched

  1. A public catalog and API for finding MCP servers.
  2. An OpenAPI specification so others can run sub-registries, for example a private catalog of the servers a company has approved.
  3. Preview terms. The project says there are no durability guarantees yet and breaking changes are possible before general availability.

Why it matters

Until now, finding an MCP server meant searching GitHub and hoping. A registry gives companies a starting point for the question their security teams will ask first: which servers are we allowed to connect, and who published them.

A registry tells an agent what servers exist. It does not tell it which one holds the number your board reviews, or how that number is defined. As the count of connectable tools goes up, the harder problem shifts from reaching data to knowing which data answers the question.
