FabCon 2025: Fabric AI skills become data agents
At FabCon 2025, Microsoft renamed Fabric AI skills to Fabric data agents and put a Fabric knowledge tool for Azure AI Agent Service into public preview, with answers limited to data each user can already access.
Microsoft's Fabric Community Conference opened on March 31, 2025, and for anyone building agents the news was a rename and a way to call Fabric data from other agents.
What was announced
- AI skills are now Fabric data agents. The feature that answers plain-language questions over Fabric data has a new name that matches how Microsoft now talks about it.
- A Fabric knowledge tool for Azure AI Agent Service, in public preview. An agent built in Azure AI Agent Service can call a Fabric data agent to answer questions from company data.
- Identity passthrough. That call runs on behalf of the signed-in user, so people only get answers from data they already have permission to see.
- Copilot for more capacities. Microsoft said Copilot and AI features will come to all paid Fabric SKUs, starting at F2, in the coming weeks.
Why it matters
Identity passthrough matters most. Security teams have been the brake on agents over company data, and with good reason. An agent that answers with the user's own permissions fits the controls a company already has, instead of asking for a new exception.
A trustworthy answer also depends on whether the agent read the data the way the business does. A data agent in Fabric works from table and column names plus whatever instructions its author writes. How well those instructions capture the business's definitions will decide how far people trust it.
