Databricks adds a Genie research agent in beta

Databricks released a research agent in Genie as a beta, along with beta APIs to create and update Genie spaces.

Genie can now ask itself follow-up questions. On November 20, 2025, Databricks added a research agent to Genie, in beta.

What was announced

  1. Genie research agent, beta. For broader questions, Genie plans several steps, runs multiple queries and pulls the findings into one answer.
  2. Space management APIs, beta. Teams can create and update Genie spaces through an API.

Why it matters

A single question that maps to a single query is easy to check. A research agent that breaks a question into five queries and combines the results is harder. Each step is a chance to pick the wrong table, the wrong filter or the wrong meaning of a word, and the final answer hides which step went wrong.

The space APIs help with that. Spaces that can be created and updated by API can live in source control, go through review and be promoted from test to production like any other asset. That is how teams get a record of who changed a definition and when, which matters more as answers get longer.
