Build 2025: MCP across Microsoft, and Fabric data agents head to Copilot Studio
At Build 2025, Microsoft announced first-party MCP support across its developer and business products and said Fabric data agents would come to Copilot Studio in the coming weeks.
Microsoft Build opened on May 19, 2025. Two threads matter for agents over company data.
MCP across Microsoft
- First-party MCP support across GitHub, Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365, Azure AI Foundry, Semantic Kernel and Windows 11.
- Microsoft and GitHub joined the MCP Steering Committee, and Microsoft contributed a design for a registry service and an updated authorization specification.
Fabric data agents and Copilot
- Copilot Studio agents can use Fabric data agents, coming in the next few weeks.
- A standalone Copilot in Power BI experience is on the way, and Copilot in Power BI will extend into Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Microsoft did not give release stages for these Fabric items.
Why it matters
Six months ago, MCP was one company's proposal. Today the largest enterprise software vendor builds it into its operating system and its business apps. That settles the plumbing question for most Microsoft shops.
It also shifts where agent projects will succeed or fail. When a Copilot Studio agent can reach a Fabric data agent, a sales leader and a finance analyst may ask the same question through different agents and expect the same number. Whether they get it depends on whether both agents work from one agreed set of definitions. That is a business decision, and no protocol makes it.
