Open Semantic Interchange enters the Apache Incubator as Apache Ossie

The Open Semantic Interchange has been accepted into the Apache Software Foundation's incubator as Apache Ossie, with more than 50 organizations involved.

The standard for exchanging business definitions is no longer run by the vendors who started it. The Open Semantic Interchange entered the Apache Incubator on June 22, 2026, as Apache Ossie, and Snowflake announced the move on July 8.

What was announced

  1. Apache Ossie, now an incubating project at the Apache Software Foundation.
  2. More than 50 organizations involved.
  3. Apache governance: decisions made in the open by contributors, not by any one vendor.

Why it matters

A specification led by a few vendors can shift with their plans. One run under Apache's open process is harder to bend toward a single product, which makes it safer to adopt. More than 50 organizations are involved. The number that will matter is how many of them ship import and export.
