MCP no longer belongs to the company that wrote it. Two announcements this week turn it into shared infrastructure.

## MCP joins the Agentic AI Foundation (December 9)

Anthropic donated the Model Context Protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a directed fund under the Linux Foundation. Anthropic, Block and OpenAI co-founded it, with support from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg. The founding projects are MCP, goose and AGENTS.md. MCP keeps its existing governance model.

## Google's managed MCP servers, in preview (December 10)

Google announced official MCP servers that it hosts and runs, starting with BigQuery, Maps, Compute Engine and Kubernetes Engine. They use Google Cloud IAM, audit logging and Model Armor, and a Cloud API Registry helps agents find them.

## Why it matters

A year ago MCP was new. It now has neutral governance, and the largest cloud vendors run official servers for their own products. For a company deciding whether to build on it, the risk of picking the wrong standard has mostly gone away.

That moves attention to what flows through the protocol. A managed BigQuery server gives an agent clean, governed access to tables. The agent still has to work out which of them holds the customers your finance team reports on, and that decides whether the answer is right.
