A year after Microsoft turned AI skills into data agents, data agents are generally available. Microsoft announced it at FabCon and SQLCon 2026, which opened on March 18.

## What was announced

1. **Fabric data agents, generally available.**
2. **Fabric MCP servers.** The local Fabric MCP server is generally available, and a remote Fabric MCP server is in public preview.
3. **Ontologies over MCP, in preview.** Fabric IQ ontologies can be reached through an MCP server, so agents outside Fabric can read them.
4. **Direct Lake on OneLake** is generally available.
5. **Graph in Fabric** general availability is expected in the coming weeks, and **Planning in Fabric IQ** was announced.

## Why it matters

General availability is the point where many companies allow a feature into production. Data agents in Fabric now clear that bar.

The bigger change is further down the list: ontologies over MCP. An ontology that only Fabric's own tools can read helps Fabric's own tools. One that any agent can reach through a standard protocol becomes the shared reference for the whole company. Every agent that reads it inherits its definitions, mistakes included.
