Databricks has stopped treating metrics as a dashboard problem. On April 2, 2026, it made metric views generally available, under the name Unity Catalog Business Semantics.

## What was announced

1. **Metric views, generally available.** Business metrics are defined once in Unity Catalog and used by dashboards, Genie and other tools.
2. **A contribution to Apache Spark.** Databricks proposed metric views to the Spark project (SPARK-54119).
3. **Support for the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI)**, the effort to share semantic definitions across tools, which Databricks joined in January.
4. **Genie Conversation API, generally available**, a year after its preview.

## Why it matters

A metric defined once is a metric that cannot quietly differ between two dashboards. That alone saves a lot of meetings.

Metrics are only half of what the business means, though. Revenue depends on what counts as a sale, which customers are in scope and which product lines roll up where. Those are definitions of things, not calculations, and they need the same care the metric just got. Databricks backing OSI suggests it expects those definitions to move between tools too.
