On March 11, 2025, Databricks released the Genie Conversation API in public preview.

## What was announced

1. **A programmatic way to talk to Genie.** Applications can start a conversation with a Genie space, ask follow-up questions and read back the generated SQL and results.
2. **Multi-turn by design.** Follow-up questions keep the context of the earlier turns.
3. **Examples for Microsoft Teams and Slack**, so teams can bring Genie answers into the chat tools they already use.

## Why it matters

Until now, a Genie space answered people who opened it in a browser. An API means other software can ask it questions too, including other agents. That is the first step from a chat window for analysts to a service that sits behind many front ends.

It also changes who the space has to serve. A space reached by an API gets asked questions its authors never pictured, by tools they never tested. The curated instructions and example queries inside the space are the only guidance those callers get, so they deserve the same care as any shared interface.
